If it has been installed, updating overwrite-installing may fix problems, add new functions, or expand existing ones. Even though other OSes might be compatible as well, we do not recommend applying this release on platforms other than the ones specified.

Standalone fax machine and copier. Includes a network connector and a page automatic document feeder. Clumsy approach to scanning over a network. Bottom Line The Lexmark Xn is a reasonably capable printer, standalone fax machine, and copier. But at this price, it ought to do more than that. It also has the right price for an AIO for a small office, a busy home office, or a small workgroup in a larger office. And it can work as a standalone fax machine and copier, as it comes complete with both a flatbed scanner mounted on a monochrome laser printer and a page automatic document feeder in the scanner lid.
An AIO should let you take advantage of all of its capabilities. In particular, you should be able to use it to fax from any PC on the network. But with the Xn, you have to print a document and fax the hard copy instead. On an equally sour note, even though the Xn lets you scan to a PC over your network, you have to jump though some unnecessary hoops to do that.
Only then can you go to the front panel, hit the scan button, choose the profile, and scan. Worse, the profile disappears when you close the browser window, so you have to create a new profile every time you want to scan. The Xn also drops the ball just a bit on paper-handling. Setup is standard for a small monochrome laser-based AIO. At To set it up on a network, you simply remove the packing materials, plug in the cables and power cord, and run the automated installation routine.
The Dell dn took about two-thirds the time, and the MFC took only a little over half as much. More than half of our test fonts were easily readable, with well-formed characters, at 5 points, and some were easily readable at 4 points.
Only one heavily stylized font with thick strokes needed 10 points. Graphics show obvious dithering , in the form of patterns in some levels of gray. Photos also show dithering but are good enough for things such as client newsletters and printing Web pages.
